Why am I getting the above error?

You are missing some required JAR to run it as web application. Make sure to include spring-boot-starter-web
If we are using maven, include it as follows.
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-boot-starter-web</artifactId>
<version>1.3.2.RELEASE</version>
</dependency>
